Just In Time • The Judy Holliday Story

Reviews

The lady in question was Judy Holliday at the Fringe Festival's Just in Time: The Judy Holliday Story, about the tremulous-voiced blonde who beat Gloria Swanson for the Oscar ("For a comedy!" as Swanson bitterly exclaimed). The loving play is a winner, using some interesting storytelling techniques—a taping of What's My Line? surreally turns into the HUAC hearings—and Marina Squerciati and the cast are tops, and not just for a comedy.

Here's why theater festivals can be fun: There is a small, intimate play at the SoHo Playhouse, part of FringeNYC. It has no scenery, scant props and four actors -- and it's a winner. Just in Time: The Judy Holliday Story deserves a bigger stage and longer run. In 88 entertaining, heartfelt minutes, audiences fall in love with its cast, particularly its lead, Marina Squerciati, who beautifully captures the funny, sad and extraordinarily American story of Judith Tuvim. Never heard of Tuvim? She's the smart Jewish girl from New York better known to millions as beloved actress Judy Holliday.

There are a number of reasons to see this wonderful bio-play: an exceptionally smart script, a vibrant cast, crisp direction, and a tale of Hollywood past that's every bit as relevant today. But the main reason can be summed up in two words: Marina Squerciati.

Squerciati sings beautifully and has perfect timing; her vocal impression is as dead-on as her wig,

With Just in Time: The Judy Holliday Story, Bob Sloan has not only chosen well in subject matter, he has created a beautiful and accurate tribute to one of Hollywood's (and Broadway's) best. Just in Time strikes all the right chords. It is by turns hilarious and touching. Sloan lovingly handles the main points in Holliday's all too short life. And about the performers! Four solid, brilliant, and extraordinary actors bring this show to life.

Much of the credit for the success of this production must go to writer and director Bob Sloan, who created an intricate interwoven tapestry out of a variety of events in Judy's life.

In Just in Time: The Judy Holliday Story, at the Soho Playhouse, playwright/director Bob Sloan finds clever ways to spark the bio-drama form. Not all of the devices in Sloan's play, which features several tunes penned by Holliday herself, are completely successful, but the piece's lapses rarely matter thanks to Marina Squerciati's winning and often quite convincing performance in the title role.
